Radon Testing in Buildings
When radon enters the enclosed space of a public building, it poses a danger to all who reside there or even those who visit occasionally.
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, “Inhaling radon gas increases the risk of lung cancer. For the general population, this means about 2,000 lung cancer deaths in Canada are related to radon each year.”
Especially at risk are densely populated buildings such as schools, hospitals, long-term care facilities, day care centers and correctional facilities, all of which should undergo radon testing to ensure the safety of all occupants.
The highly-trafficked ground floors of these structures are at particular risk for the presence of radon. In multi-level buildings, Health Canada recommends periodically testing for radon on every fifth floor, as well as the re-testing of buildings that have recently been renovated due to possible changes in structure and ventilation. The Government of Canada has recently lowered the acceptable level of radon that can be present in a public building before remedial action must be taken, making it more important than ever to conduct professional radon testing.

These short-term testing methods last from 4 to 90 days and are recommended by Health Canada guidelines for accurately measuring radon gas levels in public buildings.
